BIG WHOOP for my Mom Hat

Hello again!  I know I have been remiss in updating this blog for many months and I am sorry that I let it go so long, but, as my daughter would say, "it's no big whoop!"

Right?  What does that mean exactly?  What is a whoop and when is it big or little?

I assume but her tone and eye rolling that when she says this that I must be doing my typical over-reacting thing to whatever she is doing that I find offensive but she seems to think is unworthy of noticing.  Since I seem to be unable to distinguish between a BIG WHOOP and a little whoop, I guess I need some help, so here is a list of things and you can tell me if it is a BIG WHOOP or not.

1.  Not turning off the fish lamp so the poor mindless things can have a day or night.  I think not a big whoop.  Irritating but really, they only have a 3 second memory span so do they really care?  Probably not.

2.  Not replacing the toilet paper when you use the last of it.  Not a big whoop, again, irritating but let's be honest, we've all left the last 3 sheets on purpose once in a while so we didn't have to change the roll.

3.  Blatantly showing disrespectful behavior to a person of authority through vulgar hang gestures.  BIG WHOOP.  Totally unacceptable and worthy of major consequences.  This is a behavior that needs to stop immediately.  No matter how you feel about authority figures they are a reality and you will need to be able to deal with them in your life so learn how to now and make a few of those self made bumps a little smaller.

4.  Late to class once, maybe twice.  Not a big whoop.  Things happen and I understand this.  I think it is important to try to be on time but reality sometimes interfere.  However, late to class frequently and chronically, BIG WHOOP.  Now it's on purpose and another show of disrespect.  Unacceptable.

5.  Forgetting to turn off the lights.  Not a big whoop.  Irritating when it happens over and over and over and over again, but in the grand scheme of things it probably costs me and extra $.035 before I get up and turn it off.  I can live with that.  Not happy about it but not going to start a war over it...yet.

6.  Walking out back in the dark at 9pm with your Kindle to find a wifi hot sport so you can text your boyfriend, whom we have just dropped off, or get on facebook or whatever, ignoring the mother voice that calls for you and returning when you are bloody well done.  keep in mind you have been told on more than 1 occasion that being out when it is that dark is not OK and not answering the mother voice is never ok.  BIIIIIGGGGGGG WHHHOOOOOOOPPPPPP!!!!!!  Wanna push my button?!  You found it.  Wasn't too hard either, was it?  Then tell me I'm over reacting and "It's no big whoop" will probably make the top of my head come completely off so the fires can shoot through the ceiling unimpeded.

7.  Playing your radio loud enough that I hear it across your room, through your door, down the stairs and over the noise of the TV, thus forcing me to leave what I am doing, mount the stairs, knock and tell you turn it down.  Your response to this is 98% of the time (yes, I kept track) to say something rude about it not being that loud or so what or I don't care.  It gets turned down until the next favorite song comes on and then we start over.  I suppose this should be a big whoop but I am so used to it that I think I'll put this in just the whoop column, no big or little associated. It is certainly annoying and I wish you would listen but overall I guess I'll live through this one, so you can too.

8.  Lie to my face.  Pretty much about anything will always be a BIG WHOOP.  Get that message right now.  Lying is never ok and the more you do it the angrier I will get.  Think it's cute to say I can't prove it was a lie?  Go ahead, challenge me, cause when I shove the proof under your nose, smear i through your make up and shove it down your throat (figuratively of course) you will eat the words and, hopefully, have a better understand of my lack of stupid.  BIIIGGG WWHHOOOOOOP!

So I put it to you now.  How would you rate these (of course completely made up) scenarios on a whoop scale?

Thirty Thursday from my Mixology Hat Mango Sinsation

I love a summer evening with friends.  Calm or rowdy, it's all good with me.

Last summer my friends and I spent a great deal of time hanging out on my back porch just enjoying the cool summer eveings, good friends, a few laughs and a couple of drinks.  We started experimenting with various drink combinations just for fun and I think we hit on a couple of winners.  Please keep in mind that these combinations are designed for people who are 21 and over, have a sense of adventure and good taste.

Missy and my favorite combination we have dubbed "The Mango Sinsation".  This is a pretty straight forward drink but it can pack a bit of a punch so beware.

1 shot mango rum
1 shot lime vodka
2 oz mango soda
2 oz limeade
ice
mint
frozen peach slice or frozen mango bit

Crush a fresh mint leaf in the bottom of a tumbler.

Combine the rum, vodka and limeade over ice and shake.

Pour into a tumbler, add mango soda.

Garnish with a slice of frozen peach or a piece of frozen mango.

Add a fun straw and enjoy.

If you want to crank it up a notch, add some alcohol infused vanilla whipped cream.  Yummy!!

Advice to a Daughter - from my Mom Hat

"Never grow a wishbone, daughter, where your backbone ought to be." - Clementine Paddleford

Oh my daughter, how many times have I heard you start a sentence with the words, "I wish..."
I wish I was pretty.
I wish I had a boyfriend.
I wish I didn't have to go to school anymore.
I wish I had more money.
I wish we lived in a bigger house.
I wish I had a laptop.
I wish I had an Ipod.
I wish I had 200 hoodies.
I wish I was older.
I wish I could make my own rules.
I wish you would leave me alone.
I wish
I wish
I wish
There are more ways to make a wish than there stars in the sky or fish in the sea.
Blow the fluff off a dandelion
Wish on the first star of the evening
Wish on a falling star
Blow out your birthday candles
Blow an eyelash off a friend's finger
Coins is a wishing well
Blowing a ladybug off your finger
Using a wishbone

All of these are fine, wonderful ways to daydream about your future and the wonderfulness that it will hold, however, if all you ever do is wish, you will find your life full of empty dreams and unfulfilled desires.

Wishes are a great way to start along a path toward a goal, but wishing alone is not enough.  Begin with a wish but add determination and effort to fulfill these wishes.  If you wish school was over, then work harder at school so you can pass well, find success and put your knowledge to work for you forging a future you have planned out.  If you wish you were pretty, look in a mirror and find all the lovely things about you.  Then look within yourself and find all the truly beautiful things that make up you.  If you wish you could make your own rules, come and discuss rule changes with me in a mature, well thought out way and you might be surprised with the result.  If you wish we lived in a bigger house, work toward a good education in a field that pays handsomely and you'll be able to have the house of your dreams.
Now please do NOT think I am telling you to stop wishing.  I hope you never stop wishing.  Wishes are great.  Wishes are awesome.  Wishes are absolutely nexessary.  Some wishes should be whispered in the wind and dreamed about on a soft summer night.  Some wishes should be put right up front in a place of importance to hold your focus.  They should be the thought that makes you crack open a book, the motivation to go out on a snowy day to shovel sidewalks for tips, the reason you get up off the couch and go for a run.
A wish that remains a wish can be a lovely half forgotten memory of childhood innocence.  A wish that is shaped, worked, molded and owned can conquer mountains.

Take your wishbone and your backbone and make them one.  Strong in determination and driven toward a goal that is wholly and uniquely your own.  Climb your mountain, my daughter; I think you might be amazed with what wishes you can make come true without waiting for a fairy godmother and her magic wand.

Monday Morning Music - Appropriateness

Good Morning and Happy Monday!

Stop swearing at me!

I am starting to believe that some DJ's have a very warped sense of humor.  This is very apparent on Monday mornings as I am gulping down coffee on my drive to work.  Most Monday's is the usual, couple of songs, a bit of news, a joke that they think is funny.  They're usually not but the DJ thinks it's very clever I suppose.  Normally I listen to XM radio but in the morning I like to switch over to the local shows so I can catch at least a bit of news and the weather.  These are the warped DJ's of which I speak.  For 4 weeks straight when I switched to the local programming, I heard "Red Solo Cup" by Toby Keith.  Now I ask you, would that get you revved up on a Monday, or wish it was Friday and now you've got this whooooole week to get through.  Not Nice!

Other songs not appreciated (at least by me) on a Monday morning would be:
Eric Church's "Drink in My Hand"

George Jone's "It's Finally Friday"

Alan Jackson's "Good Time".  I know it is hard to believe that any Alan Jackson song might be on any list of inappropriate and, honestly, I would still sing along and enjoy it, but it is a weekend aimed song that does make the week seem so much longer.

What other songs would you rather not hear on a Monday morning commute to work?

Monday Morning Music - Musta Had a Good Time

I am an addict.

I freely admit it.  I am addicted to XM radio.  I love the no commercials interrupting my music.  I am still looking for the perfect channel, however.  You know the one, it plays just what I want to hear right when I want to hear it without me even knowing I want to hear it.  That doesn't seem to be too much to ask, does it?  If I win the lottery (which I didn't this past weekend, darn it) maybe I'll finance that station...or not, lol.

Until I win and make my own station, I listen mostly to The Highway on channel 39 as country music is my favorite (as I'm sure you could tell by most of my posts) and one of the tings I like about them is they go out looking for new music.  This past week I heard a new song by a new (at least to me) group that caught my attention.  It is called "Musta Had a Good Time" by Parmalee.

"Musta Had a Good Time" describes that once in a lifetime party that happened spur of the moment and leaves you with lots of questions and vague memories but also the feeling that you are a party god to have pulled off such a feat.  Give it a listen and tell me what you think.  And if you're planning a party like this, give me a call.

Just How Flexible Do You Need Me To Be? in My Teacher Hat

Wow

Has it been a day, or what?!

Four hours of sleep last night and the night before each (not the fault of my job but other things not to be typed of in this blog post so as to not break off the keys into tiny angry bits of molten plastic) made today particularly interesting but by no means different than any other day.

As teachers we are expected, even encouraged to be "flexible".  This does not mean we have to be able to literally stand on our hands or do back bend walk overs or 3 one and a half roation pike layouts from a dead start.  Instead it means we need to be able to adapt to changes quickly and keep our students engaged even as we are scrambling to re-connect our rapidly firing synapses with the latest twist that has been thrown into our laps.  Normally, this is not really a problem, afterall, I teach Special Education.  Every day for me is a crap shoot as to whether I'm going to be able to teach what I had planned or whether I am going to have to fly by the seat of my pants and go in a completely different direction, based on the kids, the other classes and, sometimes it seems like, the flavor of the day.  Actually, I would never plan these odds becasue 9 times out of 10, I am not teaching what I had planned.  Honestly, I'm not sure why I plan at all some weeks but I still do.  I guess planning is pretty ingrained but just as ingrained is the flexiblity thing.

I would like to share with you the twists, turns, bends and backflips that made up my day today.

Pre - 8:00 (start of the day)
plan:  eat breakfast, read email, change calendar
actual:  talk to 7th grade aid about changes needed in the history test we are giving tomorrow, get called to cover ELA class as the teacher over slept

8:05
plan:  co-teach ELA
actual:  run classroom, make up lesson as I go, have principal come in while I am flying by the belt loop on the seat of my pants, keep going, act like I have a clue about the days plan.  Stop and take 3 sec to converse with him and he asks if he can address the class.  Re-direct, no more making up a lesson on the fly, now we are backing up the 25 "few" minutes chat about bullying he has with the class.

8:55
plan:  review history with the 1 student I have
actual:  walk him to the nurse before he passes out, grab some bubbly caffine, inform the guidance office of the nurse detour, grab my mail, head back up to my room.
plan:  work on agendas for next year, calendar (which I still hadn't changed), field trip permission form (which I still have to locate on the "shared" drive)
actual:  get call from the nurse, my student is headed back up to me.  She can't get hold of his dad and he says he's feeling better.  Now we will do about half the review for his test tomorrow.  Fortunatelly, he's a pretty bright, if massively scattered, young man so he has a pretty good grasp on the history concept.  Not very worried about his test tomorrow, just his health.

9:35
plan:  get back to the calendar, permission form, agendas, check email, update modification and accomadation sheet, pick any of the 15 piles on my desk and find the bottom...
actual:  again discuss the changes made tot he history test, print off another copy for the 7th grade aid (who is a wonderful, organized woman sho tends to worry waaaaay too much, but she balances me and my lack of worry), go over the weeks schedule, show off the agenda front cover and get (not so great) feed back.. It was deserved, it wasn't a very nice cover.  Discuss the fact that new homeroom lists were in our mailboxes, meaning there would be fire drills today.

10:14
plan:  math class
actual:  math class (that was a relief, it went as planned.  Well, except for the 5 students who were not there and we had to track down, and I brought in a snack for 1 student so she didn't have to go to the nurse, although it turns out that's where she was afterall.)

11:02
plan:  go to science, hang out lang enough to see if I was necessay today, grab a couple of Ipads for students to make up missed work, go back and get busy on the ever growing list of things to do today.
actual:  finally read the emails, decided it would not be a science day.  Based on the email she just shot off, if I went in there, it would be a gripe fest, not a class.  Worked on updating the calendar (finally!), re-read the agends ordering email, realized the deadline was...yesterday.  Sent out email, furiously return to working on the agenda, call the office to get a copy of the calendar for next year for the agendas, find out, it's not done yet, fire off another email

And so my day went.  Not 1 thing went as planned.  I ddin't get the Ipads and had to just study history, which took the whole period anyway.  Defended myself and my kids about not getting the Ipads today, as we had something other than science to do (that might have been a mistake considering her mood but really, I am responsible for more than just 1 class) The aformentioned fire drills happened, ripping into my class time with kids who cannot afford to lose time.

Yep, it was a crazy day.  On very little sleep.  Now I get to go home, get my hair done, and start the family conference about the rest of the reason I am so tired today.

Some days I think I need a life line, sometimes, I'd rather have cement shoes.

Monday Morning Music

Good Morning!
It has been waaaaaay too long since I have posted and I am sorry.  I had surgery on my left thumb to release my trigger thumb and it is still recovering.  It's kind of amazing how many times a day I use both thumbs.  I had no idea but I am very appreciative to have them both mostly working again.

So, enough of my excuses, on with the music.  I have been growing fonder and fonder of the music being put out by Dierks Bentley lately and I would like to share one of my absolute favorites right now.  The song is called "Home" and it is a fabulous look at national pride, where we have come from and where we still want to go.  I find I agree with every single thing this song portrays and it has become my favorite shower song.  My only problem is the key is just slightly low and I have a hard time hitting the low notes when I sing along with the radio.  You can bet this one gets cranked up every time it comes on the radio.

Gonna have to look into concert dates.  I think I might need to hear this one in person.  Do yourself a favor and really listen to the words.  We may not be perfect, but we, as Americans, have much to be proud of, as well as much to offer to make our own mark as well.
